Traylor Updates

September 1st

Good afternoon, Traylor Academy parents,

It was wonderful to meet so many of you on Wednesday at Back-to-School night.  Parents are a vital part of a child’s success at school, and I am excited about the start of this school year.

We are exploring adding a before- and after-school daycare program to Traylor Academy.  Part of that exploration is finding out how much interest there is in adding this program.  Basically, this would be a program where students can come to school early and be supervised by a childcare staff, and at the end of the day, students receive daycare until 6:00pm on the school’s premises.  Please fill out the survey located here(https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/39VNY5N)  by September 10, so we can analyze the information in order to move forward.  The survey also checks with you to see if you would like Traylor to offer additional enrichment opportunities for our 2nd -5th graders after school, as well.  I am in contact with a company that can make this happen for parents, at minimal cost.  Please take a few moments now to complete this important survey – there’s only 8 questions.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me.

Have a wonderful weekend, and we’ll see your kiddos back at school on Tuesday, Sept. 6!

Letters to Parents

August 22, 2016

Hello Traylor Students and Parents,

It is with great joy that I welcome you into the 2016-17 school year at Traylor Academy!  I am very excited to be joining this wonderful community as the new principal, and I am looking forward to working with all of you through this new year.  We also have some new and “new-ish” teachers joining Traylor this year:  Leticia Arroyo is moving from ELA-S Literacy Interventions to ECE/Kindergarten ELA-S teacher; a long-term substitute at Traylor last year will be a “floating” ELA-S teacher for our ELA-S classrooms this year; Kirsten Koseck, formerly a 5th grade teacher at Traylor, will be our new Science Enrichment specials teacher in the STEM lab; Josselyn Perez, formerly a paraprofessional at Traylor, is our newest Special Education teacher; Barbara Lamana will be our new Social Worker this year; and Sharon Lee will be our Occupational Therapist.

Our teachers have been working hard all summer, attending training on our new curriculum the district chose, and refining our understandings of best practices when teaching literacy to your children.  Many hours have been spent together as plans have begun to emerge, blending the Common Core standards, the new curriculum, and the knowledge of our students in preparing for the year with literacy instruction.  Our new math curriculum has been a long-awaited choice by the district, and has the teachers busy planning their new lessons that also connect with Common Core standards.  These are two very big changes for our teachers and students, and we can’t wait to fill you in on how to best support your child along the way!

It is so important that parents be an integral part of their child’s education, and opening the doors to communicate with you in a variety of ways will be an area of focus this year.  We are revamping our school website (the big reveal will be after Labor Day – but in the meantime bookmark our address and check there often for updates:  traylor.dpsk12.org), and we’ve started a Facebook page (Traylor Academy; https://www.facebook.com/TraylorAcademy/); please “Like” us because this is one place where we will update upcoming events and show pictures about the kids at work in school.  Encourage your family members to “Like” our page, too!  But most important, we NEED you to have an email address that is current in school records, and given to your classroom teacher.  The most efficient way for us to communicate with you is through these methods:

  • School website: http://traylor.dpsk12.org/
  • Classroom/Grade level website – details will come from your child’s teacher
  • Teachers emailing information to you as needed
  • Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TraylorAcademy/
  • School voice and text messages – please make sure your phone numbers and email addresses are current through Parent Portal
  • Parent Portal:  this is the place you can visit to check on your child’s grades and progress.  You must have an email address.  For directions on how to sign up and access Parent Portal, go to https://myportal.dpsk12.org/Pages/Default.aspx I will continue to remind you to sign up with Portal all year long.

It is so important that schools have a strong relationship with parents and families to help children be successful with their learning.  I want you to be a big part of your child’s education, but I need your help in being accessible through online and digital means.  If you have a smartphone, you are there!  We will rely on digital messaging throughout the year to communicate with you.  If you do not have access to being online, please let your child’s teacher(s) know so accommodations can be made.

What’s coming up?

  • Bear Valley’s Concert in the Park, Friday, August 26, 7:00pm.  Bring a family picnic for the evening, and be sure to visit the Traylor Academy tent to pick up a water and to say “Hi!”
  • Be sure to join us on Wednesday, August 31, from 5:30pm – 7:30pm at Back to School Night.  Details to come, but it’s going to be a FUN night!
  • Traylor Academy Boosters (TABS) is our fantastic parent organization, and they will meet September 1, 6:00pm – 7:00pm, in the lunchroom.  Join us at the first meeting of the new year, to learn how you can help support our great school!  There are no dues.

Last, but not least, I want to unveil the new Traylor Vision that was collaboratively developed this summer.

Together we honor and cultivate a community that engages the head, guides the hands, and embraces the heart in a life-long love of learning.

Traylor’s Touchstone core values:  Perseverance, Respect, and Celebrate

We believe that this says who we are at Traylor Academy, why we do the work we do, and what we want our kids to become.  Our vision will guide us in our work and our decisions, this year and in the future.

Please join us in our work in educating your children.  Volunteers are needed in classrooms, as copying assistance, in our library (we need daily help!), and in myriad other ways.  Stop by the office to learn how to become a volunteer!  Whether you can help on a daily/weekly basis, or just once in a while, we would be grateful to have you join us.

Please make sure to introduce yourself to me as our paths cross this year.  I can’t wait to begin a strong working relationship with all of the parents of wonderful Traylor Academy!

Sincerely,

Dawn Carrico

  • Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/TraylorAcademy/

Sinceramente,

Dawn Carrico

Thursday Folders & Text Messages for School Information

We like to keep our parents & families updated about important events and information throughout the school year.  To help parents know when essential communication is coming home, we will use Thursday Folders this year in all of our classrooms.  Please look for the Thursday Folder each week, and return any important papers that need to be signed in that folder, starting on Friday.  Our school also provides text messages periodically to families who would like to receive those.  To receive messages via text from Traylor, please text @9bff0 to 81010. You can opt-out of messages at any time by replying, ‘unsubscribe @9bff0′.

2015-16 School Schedule and Breakfast in the Classroom/Snacks and Menus

This year, Traylor will have Breakfast in the Classroom.  All students will be offered a nutritious breakfast each morning, after the first bell rings in their classrooms.  Though students are not required to have breakfast, it will be offered (at no charge) to every student, every day.  If you’re curious which items will be served, you can go to the DPS Food Services menu website: http://enterprisemanagement.dpsk12.org/food-services/menu/  We will also continue to have fruit or vegetable snacks four days a week, Tuesday – Friday.  This year, we’ll be serving these snacks in the afternoon.

School Store (Mondays and Thursdays)

This year, we will continue to have a School Store in our cafeteria on Monday and Thursday mornings before school from 8:30 – 8:50 AM.  Our dedicated staff will run the store, and students are able to purchase low cost, fun school supplies.

Citizenship Assemblies and PAWS

We love to celebrate our students at Traylor!  In the first week of school, many students have received PAWS certificates for showing how they are Prepared, Accountable, Working Hard, and Supportive.  Each week, we will have a drawing from all of the PAWS certificates, and those students drawn will receive recognition over the loud speaker, a sticker and a $1 Gift Certificate to the School Store.  Ask your child about PAWS, and I’m sure they’ll be able to share even more about this recognition.  Each month, we will recognize a few students in each classroom for being “Good Citizens.”  We will host Citizenship Assemblies on the first Monday of each month, starting in October.  These are very special awards, and classroom teachers will contact parents of the Good Citizens to make sure you’re given the date and time of the Citizenship Assembly.

Traylor Fundamental Academy Student Represents Denver SCORES at National Poetry SLAM!   In New York City!

IMG_4637

A Traylor Academy student again was chosen to represent all of Denver SCORES at the National Poetry SLAM! in New York City, in all expenses paid trip by the America SCORES organization.  Joseph Nguyen, 5th Grade student, will perform in April in Times Square with other scholar athletes from America SCORES programs throughout the county.  He will be joined by Traylor’s SCORES writing coach and 2nd Grade Teacher, Debra Maldonado. This will be a red-carpet and star-studded event in New York City.  The National Poetry SLAM! occurs each spring at venues such as HBO Studios, Harlem’s World Famous Apollo Theater and the New York Stock Exchange. Thousands of SCORES students take center stage at regional Poetry SLAM’s! for the opportunity to perform on a national stage—only 28 get the chance. With students performing their original poetry, the event showcases the power of America SCORES to improve lives while celebrating the achievements of these outstanding elementary school youth. The SLAM! is attended by SCORES families, coaches and teachers from around the country, as well as representatives of top corporate, finance, sports/brands. In 2014, we had our first live webcast of the event, sponsored by News Corp.

Also, the other two other semi-finalists from all of Denver SCORES programs were Traylor 5th Grade students, Ryan Wu and Chahn Vinh.  All three talented poets performed their own poetry at the 5th Grade Citizenship Assembly in February here at Traylor Academy!
